"His huge buzzard wings, dirty and half-plucked were forever entangled in the mud."
Marquez uses diction with words such as "buzzard" and "forever entangled" to portray the angel as a helpless and inelegant creature, rather than the expected symbol of beauty, grace, and power. The connotation of "buzzard" as a scavenging and dirty beast is altered by the words "half-plucked" and "forever entangled." The angel is damaged and trapped by the cruelties of humanity and Earth. Although we expect an angel to be powerful, wise, and respected, this angel is viewed as a helpless and useless animal, pitifully sprawled in the mud, inspiring all of the disdain of a buzzard that comes to pick at the dead.
